2021 Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest has been successfully completed
Our university (SKKU) held Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest (Head of operation: Prof. Sung Jae Ho of Law School) online on April 24 (Sat).
To communicate with people around the world through Hangeul and to induce proper understanding and interest in Korean culture, SKKU has held Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest in many countries around the world, including China, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Southeast Asia since 2007.
Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest is not only a competition that shows the writing skills of foreign students studying Korean, but also a competition widely known as a gateway to studying in Korea. In 2019, it was aired on KBS <3 Days of Documentary> as a special feature for Hangeul Day.
However, it is impossible to host the contest in Korea due to COVID-19, so Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest has been held online since 2020 in line with the era of non-contact.
By switching to online contest, the restriction on the number of students per school, which was originally limited to one or two, was removed, and the host area was newly established and expanded.
2021 regional contest were held in Korea (2nd), China (12th), Central Asia (12th), and Europe (5th), with 473 out of a total of 622 applicants participating.
President Shin Dong Ryeol said in his greeting, “We have been able to see the pure heart and passion of many young people studying Korean and their keen interest in Korea through the Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest. We will continue to provide support and efforts for students studying Korean to move toward bigger dreams.”
He also said, “Hangeul is the foundation and bridge of the Korean Wave, so I sincerely hope that you will not only enjoy the Korean Wave and be interested in Korea and Hangeul, but also grow into a global leader who contributes to your country and Korea's development together."
The results of 2021 Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest will be announced on June 1 (Tue) and a total of 15 winners will be selected including Gold, Silver, Bronze Awards. Winners will be given the opportunity to participate in SKKU’s short-term programs, by choosing between International Summer/Winter Semester or the Korean language course of Sungkyun Language Institute.
Gold, Silver, Bronze Award winners will be invited to participate in the annual Global Contest held in Korea for 3 nights and 4 days. The Global Contest will also provide programs for understanding Korea. However, due to COVID-19, Global Contest will be held online this year, and the winners of 2021 will be invited in 2022.
Gold, Silver, Bronze Award winners for the Global Contest will be given the benefit of exempting all tuition fees for visiting students (1 semester) or master's (4 semesters). Winners can choose bachelor's or master's benefits depending on their career path.
Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest will be held every year throughout the world. You can find more information on the contest and previous award-winning works at the website of Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest. (hangul.skku.edu)
