- Rector of Saint Petersburg State University Visits SKKU Dr. Nikolay Mikhaylovich Kropachev, the Rector of Saint Petersburg State University in Russia visited SKKU on May 23rd (Tues) to have a meeting with President CHUNG and SKKU representatives including Prof. Sung Jin SONG (Vice-President, Planning and Regulation Division), Prof. Dong Uk KIM (Vice-President, Academic Affairs Division), Prof. Ja Choon KOO (Vice-President, Office of International Affairs), and Prof. Ekaterina Popova (Russian Language and Literature). At the meeting, the attendees had a discussion about invigorating joint research activities and student exchanges at summer school. They also developed detailed discussions for Korea-Russia Presidential Forum which is expected to be held in November of this year. Saint Petersburg State University is the oldest and one of the largest universities in Russia. The university has a reputation for having educated the majority of Russia’s political elite including presidents Vladimir Putin and Dimitry Medvedev. They made exchange agreement with SKKU in 1998. - GIVE TO CHANGE Scholarship Fund-Raising Activity by S-ANGEL 38 students in S-ANGEL (PR Ambassador Society for University Development) had a fundraising event from May 17th (Wed) to May 25th (Thurs) at both the Seoul and Suwon campuses. A student who organized this event explained, “We started this activity in order to support students who are in need of financial assistance. We hope the event will create the opportunity for SKKU members to care more and show love to each other.” “I am very proud of the students who came up with this meaningful idea and truly thankful they helped to make the opportunity to share intimacy, especially during a time when there is so much competition for grades and employment. I am willing to participate in this kind of donation if the circumstances allow,” said a student who participated in the event. Over 300 SKKU members participated in the event, and the funds generated will be used to help students who have economic difficulties. University College

- Dean of University College receives the presidential citation on Teacher's Day Dean of University College, professor Hong Jun YOO received presidential citation on May 15th, at the 36th Teacher's Day government award ceremony from Ministry of Education. Professor Hong Jun YOO has been credited for development of liberal education and humanistic education at SKKU. This citation is the result of the effort for the diffusion of SKKU University College Model and Character Training Model, and is a great opportunity to demonstrate the superiority of SKKU's liberal education. - SKKU Int’l Students Experience Seoul and Korean Culture
- SKKU Int’l Students Experience Seoul and Korean Culture The Office of International Student Services (OISS) held the “SKKU International Student Culture Experience and Exchange Program of the Humanities Social Sciences Campus (HSSC) and Natural Sciences Campus (NSC) - 2017 Sungkyunwan Tour and Seoul Castle Road Walk” as a student activity on the 13th (SAT) of May. More than 50 international students participated in this event. Especially, 30 students from the NSC enjoyed the Seoul castle walk and HSS Campus tour as it was their first visit to the HSSC. After the walking tour, all of the participants enjoyed Korean traditional food (bibimbab, seafood & potato pancake) for lunch. The OISS plans to provide various events for international students at both the Humanities and Social Sciences and Natural Sciences Campus to experience Korea’s unique culture. This event was the start of cultural programs for 2017 and a tour of the NSC and Suwon Hwasung Fortress will be held next time. University College

- Rector of Leiden University Visits SKKU Dr. Carel STOLKER, the Rector of Leiden University in the Netherlands visited SKKU on April 27th (Thurs) to have a meeting with President CHUNG and SKKU representatives including Prof. Sung Jin SONG (Vice-President, Planning and Regulation Division), Prof. Dong Uk KIM (Vice-President, Academic Affairs Division), Prof. Ja Choon KOO (Vice-President, Office of International Affairs), Prof. Kyung Soo LEE (Dean, School of Medicine), Prof. Patricia Goedde (Law School), and Prof. Boudewijn WALRAVEN (Academy of East Asian Studies). At the meeting, the attendees had a discussion about expanding the boundaries of their exchange activities from legal studies, physics, and Asian studies to biomedical and biotechnology. They also agreed to hold the 2nd SKKU-Leiden Forum in October of this year. Furthermore, they shared their development plans and strategies for student exchanges. Bilateral ties between the two universities are expected to strengthen as a result of the meeting. Founded in 1575, Leiden University is the oldest public university in the Netherlands and one of the Europe’s leading international research institutions. The school has an outstanding reputation due to its proficiencies in the fields of archeology, medicine, and legal studies. - SKKU Holds 9th Central Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest
- SKKU Holds 9th Central Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest “I started to think about what can I share with others after I saw a disable student playing the flute for Arirang which he learned from a Korean volunteer.” That was a passage from Tajik State University of Commerce student Mirzoaliev Khushnud’s (25) writing for the 9th Central Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest about the subject of “True Happiness”. At the writing contest around 40 students from four countries including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan participated: Khushnud received the gold prize. SKKU holds the Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest every year in various regions like China, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and East Europe with the aim to expand Korean culture and cultivate students that can take part in exchanges between Korea and the other countries. SKKU provides full scholarships for graduate programs to winners of the event. Aidarova Aigerim who won the gold prize at the 4th Central Asia Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest received her degree at SKKU Graduate School of Political Science and Diplomacy, and is currently working as a diplomat for the Kazakhstani government. The Sungkyun Writing Contest overcame a financial setback in 2010 when SKKU couldn’t hold the event due to a lack of funding in its budget. However, with support from Hong Duk KIM, an SKKU alumnus and CEO of Ierae CS, the event was able to continue since 2011. “I would like to provide continuous support so that the Sungkyun Writing Contest can get bigger and bigger,” said Mr. Kim. - SKKU Receives Top Score in BRIDGE Project
- SKKU Receives Top Score in BRIDGE Project On May 10th, the evaluation results for the 20 universities that participated in the Beyond Research and Innovation Development for Good Enterprises (BRIDGE) project were announced. SKKU received an “excellent” score. The BRIDGE project was introduced by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea to assist in the commercialization of outstanding technologies owned by universities so that the creative assets can become sophisticated intellectual properties. The Ministry of Education plans to spend a total of 15 billion won on the project from 2015 to 2017. Over the past two years, the project has made a profit of 41 billion won as a result of 1465 of technology transfers. The evaluation was conducted in consideration of technological entrepreneurship, technology transfer, the number of officials involved in commercialization, last year’s performance, and plans for next year. Ratings of “excellent”, “good”, and “standard” were given depending on the evaluation results, and operating expenses will be given in accordance with the rating. Four universities, including SKKU, received an “excellent” rating. SKKU made strategic plans targeting patent litigation and compensation for damages in the US. “Interest and participation in university technology commercialization is getting larger through the BRIDGE project. I hope this project can support transferring creative ideas into actual businesses,” said Young Gon KIM, an official from the Ministry of Education. University College

- 2017 University College LC(Learning Community) Jacket Design Competition
- 2017 University College LC(Learning Community) Jacket Design Competition University College (Dean: Hongjun YOO) held 'LC Jacket Design Competition' among University College freshmen in 2017. This competition, a second competition in succession of last year's LCI (Learning Community Identity) competition, 26 Learning Communities, about 400 students participated. Among the entries, total of 18 were selected as prize winners. The prize winners, which comply with the UI standard of SKKU, has passed objective and multi-faceted evaluation by Sungkyun Mentors in both campuses. Those winners will be prized with small support fund for LC activities, and every participant was awarded with certificate in the name of the Dean. Along with this competition, University College is holding 'Thank-you Mailbox in SKKU' event, commemorating Parents' Day and Teacher's Day in May. This event is for students to look back on their school days before entering the university, and to bring back anlalog emotion away from smart devices. University College

- SKKU has proved to be a ‘Global Top University’
- SKKU has proved to be a 'Global Top University' Beyond one of the renowned universities in Korea, SKKU has proved to be a ‘Global Top University’ by placing high in evaluation rankings. Recently, SKKU placed 13th in the ‘Asia University Rankings 2017’ by Times Higher Education, while ranking 1st among Korean comprehensive private universities. The Times stated that “from continuous development, SKKU is leading changes among Korean higher education institutions.” SKKU declared a ‘New Challenge Project’ last year in order to step forward and become a globally renowned university. This project includes action plans to be placed in the Asia top 10 and World top 50 from competitions with international universities. SKKU is strengthening its networks with research-oriented universities of the world, such as expanding joint forums with top engineering schools in the US. This year, SKKU plans to hold a join forum with the University of Minnesota in the field of Nano and Physics and SKKU-PKU forum with Peking University, China. The President of SKKU, Kyu Sang CHUNG said “I am very happy to see these results which represent SKKU’s hard work over the past years. Through the ‘New Challenge Project’, SKKU will focus on developing its core strategy and becoming a world renowned university.” Since Samsung Foundation joined SKKU management in 1996, the university has shown rapid development. Nowadays, SKKU is working on education innovation with Samsung to cultivate the most talented engineers. 2017 Spring Semester Global Buddy Orientation University College hosted 2017 spring semester Global Buddy Orientation in 22th March, 2017. 347 students (International: 242 students, Korean: 105students) have participated the "Global Buddy" orientation in Seoul or Suwon Campus. The first section of the orientation started with the announcement from Sungkyun Mentor. Sungkyun Mentor informed the schedule about Global Buddy programs and know-how for running the buddy group efficiently. The second section was about the group meeting. International Students and Korean students had chance to find out who are their buddies for the semester. Students had hardship to speak each other for a short time, however, soon the classroom became energetic with their chattering and laughing. In this time, not only the students from Asia region (China, Japan, Hong Kong) have participated, but also students from 10 countries including Russia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, applied for
program that we could recognize the "Globalized SKKU" in the classroom. These students will make plans for the detailed programs which they will proceed in this semester. This orientation is meant to match the international students with the domestic students to make a chance to interact and exchange cultural aspects.
