- SKKU-Leiden Joint Forum was Successfully Held on Jan 31st The SKKU-Leiden University Joint Forum was successfully held on Jan 31st at the SKKU 600th Anniversary Hall. This forum was the 2nd join forum after the 1st forum held in Leiden University during June 30th ~ July 1st in 2016. At the forum, 5 professors from the Department of East Asian Studies at SKKU and 4 professors from the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) participated and spent time to discuss subjects such as: culture, arts in China and Japan, labor and human rights in North Korea, and Korean history with new perspectives. The Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) is a global research institute with long tradition and excellent academic competence. Also, it has created some of the world’s top interdisciplinary research performance in the field of Asian Studies. From the forum, the Academy of East Asian Studies at SKKU is expected to expand its global academic network into the European region and prepare the ground for sustainable and productive joint research with Leiden University. - 2018 Pre-College Orientation for Newly Admitted Students was held 2018 Pre-college orientation for newly admitted students was held on Wedenesday January 3rd, at Auditorium in both Natural Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences Campus. The Orientation was for freshmen students in University College units. The first part of the orientation started with the introduction of Sungkyun Mentors. Following sequence was the introduction of University College and Pre-college program that the students can participate before entering SKKU. The senior students also took part in the pre-college orientation, introducing LC(Learning Community) and giving useful tips to spend winter vacations before the semester starts. After KINGO cheering squad's ceremony, students separated by their LCs. The second part of the orientation was carried on under the lead of FG(Freshman Guide) of each LC. There were ice-breaking sessions in which students had a chance to introduce themselves to others, fulfilling guerrilla missions and freshman students had a chance to solve their curiosity on university life through Q&A session with seniors. Most of the newly admitted students who participated were satisfied with the pre-college orientation. After the orientation, pre-collge program starts from January 22nd. Through the program, students can experience university lectures beforehand, and have a chance to adopt better to the university life. University College

- H.E. Ernesto Cordero Arroyo, Speaker of the Mexican Senate, Gives Special Lecture at SKKU On January 23, Sungkyunkwan University (President: Kyu Sang CHUNG) invited H.E. Ernesto Cordero Arroyo, the Speaker of the Mexican Senate, to give a special lecture. Senator Arroyo graduated from the Mexican Autonomous Institute of Technology (ITAM) and earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. He then served as the Director of Integral Administration of Risks in the Banco Nacional de Obras y Servicios Publicos (BANOBRAS), the Undersecretary of Energetic and Technological Development Planning in the Energy Secretariat, the Head of the Social Development Secretariat, and the Finance Secretary of Mexico. Senator Arroyo gave a special lecture on the topic of “Mexico in a Changing World: Challenges and Opportunities.” He explained the current situation in Mexico, a center of massive political and economic change, and explained to students how Mexico will overcome this uncertainty. Senator Arroyo’s visit to South Korea was made possible through an invitation from Sye Kyun CHUNG, the Speaker of the Korean National Assembly. Senator Arroyo wished to visit Sungkyunkwan University, the oldest university in Korea, and give a special lecture at SKKU because of his interest in Education. SKKU’s President Kyu Sang CHUNG said, “Mexico is the center of the Korean Wave in Central and South America. Through Senator Arroyo’s visit, a variety of projects are being planned with several universities in order to realize not only education and research, but practical exchange and cooperation between students and cultures.” University College

- New Year’s Message from the President of SKKU, Kyu Sang CHUNG Dear Sungkyun Family, The eventful year of 2017 that saw many issues and changes within the country has passed, and the year of 2018 has come. 2018 is the year of the Golden Dog as well as the year of 得意之秋, which means all wishes come true. I sincerely hope that all SKKU members’ dreams and wishes are realized in accordance with the meaning of 2018. Since SKKU declared ‘VISION 2020+’ as a blueprint of SKKU’s vision last year, we have shown outstanding achievement. In particular, SKKU has expanded its value as a global leading research-oriented university by publishing over 5,200 articles in the famous scientific journal, Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). Our research competence is recognized from various outcomes such as ranking No.2 in Korea for citation counts for top 1% research papers, the largest number of awardees (3 people) for Highly Cited Researchers in 2017, the only known Korean awardee (Prof. Nam Gyu PARK) for “2017 Potential recipients of the Nobel Prize", and more. Also, SKKU has strengthened its brand value as a global leading university by receiving high rankings in various evaluations. SKKU is the No.1 Korean private comprehensive university, 108th in QS world university rankings and 111th in THE, No.1 in NCSI for 11 consecutive years, No.1 in the job employment rate (76.4%) for 3 consecutive years, and more. Furthermore, SKKU is putting effort into promote new technology and investment by establishing the AI Convergence Center, which will lead the 4th Industrial Revolution and Kingo Investment Partners, a venture capital made by SKKU alumni companies. When I was appointed as a President of SKKU, I promised to improve results by building a solid foundation during my 1st year. During my presidency, I have been pushing for the New Challenge Project for 5 core fields: Software and Convergence Education, Research Competence, Global Alliance, Industrial-Academic Cooperation, and Management Innovation, and achieved many fruitful performances. I will give my best effort to complete projects that we have been working on. I believe the outstanding results that SKKU has shown were achieved by our three-in-one system of university, foundation, and alumni who have given their best efforts. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all of the Sungkyun members: professors, staff, students, the university foundation, and alumni who gave their dedication and passion for the development of SKKU. I would like to ask for passion, active participation, and continuous innovation of all members in order to become a world top institution beyond the limits and crisis that our university is confronting. - 2017 University College Freshman Guide Workshop
- 2017 University College Freshman Guide Workshop University College(Dean: Hong Joon YOO) hosted 2017 Freshman Guide Workshop in youth training center in Yangju city, from November 25th to 26th. A total of 71 students, including Freshman Guides(FG) from both campuses participated in the event. Sungkyun Mentor, Jonghee JEON presided over the event, there were lectures on role and responsibility of FG, CPR practice and gender equality education. After lecture, students had an opportunity to strengthen friendship with students from other campuses through various ice-breaking recreational activities such as relay-race, bowling and traditional games. FG is a students organization of University College, organized for students entering Sungkyunkwan University as units. FG members support events for freshman students, including preliminary orientation for freshman, and help students adapt to university life. During the semester, FG arranges 'LC(Learning Community) Atheletic Meetings' and 'University College Day'. University College prepared an emergency vehicle for the students' safety, with CPR practice and automatic defibrillator education for students. University College

- SKKU Receives ‘Best Students Project Award’ at IETF Hackathon 2017
- SKKU Receives ‘Best Students Project Award’ at IETF Hackathon 2017 The SKKU team composed of students from the College of Software (Jin Yong KIM, Dae Young HYUN, Eun Soo KIM, Dong Jin HONG, Tae Gyun ROH, Sa Rang WE, Seung Jin LEE) received an award at the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) Hackathon. The team was led by Prof. Jae Hoon JEONG and Prof. Sang Won HYUN, who also gave a presentation at the Hackathon. IETF is an international organization which develops and promotes voluntary Internet standards, in particular the standards that comprise the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP). IETF holds a regular meeting every year, and this year was the 100th IETF Hackathon. The SKKU team participated in the event with the I2NSF Framework Project and received the Best Students Project Award. From this recognition, the SKKU team had a chance to demonstrate their program to the organization before the plenary session and was able to let global leading ICT companies (ex. Google, Apple, Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei) know about SKKU’s activities and excellence. Also, the team had a discussion with engineers and researchers in the network field by presenting their Hackathon content and contribution report at the I2NSF Working Group Session. - 2017 University College Day was held University College hosted 2017 University College Day on November 10th(Friday) at Humanities and Social Sciences Campus. The event was held for students to interact with other University College students, through athletic events and sharing of know-hows of LC(Learning Community) activities of Univeristy College freshmen for one year. Also, the University College Day event was held to promote various LC activities, Creative Study Group, Global Buddy and other FYE programs. The LC Athletic Competition proceeded in playground after Dean's opening speech. The LCs of Spring Semester participated in dodgeball, futsal and relay race. However, due to the heavy rain at the end of part 1 of the event, the athletic competition was stopped the for safety of the students, and University College decided to declare all the participating LCs as winners. Part 2 of the event was consisted of presentations and award ceremony. Peer Leaders presented the exemplary cases of LC portfolio, Creative Study Group and Global Buddy. The award was given based on the frequency of LC gatherings, participation level, fidelity and design of portfolio. The head of 10th Freshman Guide, Hye Lim PARK(16' Public Administration) who directed the event at the field said, "Although I was confused due to the heavy rain that I didn't expect, Univeristy College office has made a quick and rational decision. - The 5th Korea-Russia Rector’s Forum The 5th Korea-Russia Rector’s Forum with the theme ‘The 4th Industrial Revolution and changes in Higher Education’ was held on November 9th (Thursday) at SKKU’s Natural Sciences Campus. At the forum, rectors from 13 Russian universities and 20 Korean universities participated and had in-depth discussions for seeking new directions for Korea and Russia’s higher education. The welcome speech was delivered by Kyu Sang CHUNG, the President of SKKU, followed by Kyu Hyung LEE, Chairman of Secretariat of KRD; Yeo Pyo YUN, the President of Chungbuk National University; and Ivanchenko Sergei NIKOLAEVICH, the Rector of Pacific National University/Head of Russian KRD «Education and Science» working group. At the 1st session, Prof. Jee-Hyong LEE (Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering/Vice Dean of Sungkyun AI Convergence Center) gave a presentation with the subject ‘AI and the Human’ while Prof. Anisimov Nikita YURIEVICH, Interim President of Far Eastern Federal University, talked about ‘Response to the Challenge of the 4th Industrial Revolution: Russia Techno Park as a Motive of Innovation and Development.’ The 2nd session was held under the theme of ‘The Age of Convergence and A New Direction for Korean-Russian University Exchange: Interdisciplinary Cooperation, Mutual Degree Recognition, Academic-Industrial Cooperation, etc.’ and the participants developed cooperation models in the fields of humanities/social sciences and natural sciences. They also shared their ideas on joint research activities, academia-industry cooperation, and research complexs. In the afternoon, each department had an individual meeting with Russian universities. On the SKKU side, professors from the Dept. of Mathematics, Dept. of Physics, Dept. of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Dept. of Software, School of Chemical Engineering, Dept. of Civil, Architectural and Environmental System Engineering, Dept. of Systems Management Engineering, SAINT, and the Center for Integrated Nanostructure Physics participated. Lastly, Russian delegations had time to tour the Suwon campus and N-Center. The Center for Neuroscience Imaging Research and the Center for Integrated Nanostructure Physics introduced their research fields and researchers as well as their research facilities. On November 10th (Friday), the rectors from Russian universities visited the Samsung Innovation Museum (SIM) located in the Samsung Electronics Suwon Complex. They discussed possible academic-industrial cooperation with Samsung Electronics and had a chance to see Samsung’s history, technology, and products. University College

- Samsung SDS and SKKU Will Newly Establish the Department of Data Science Convergence
- Samsung SDS and SKKU Will Newly Establish the Department of Data Science Convergence Partnering with Samsung SDS, SKKU will newly establish the Department of Data Science Convergence. Samsung SDS and SKKU announced on Oct 26th, 2017 that they have signed an MOU for the activation of data analysis technology and joint research activities. Due to this agreement, SKKU will establish the ‘Department of Data Science Convergent’ with a student quota of 60 by March 2018 in the AI Institute. The main roles of Big Data experts are analyzing corporations’ big data with various techniques and increasing the efficiency of analyzing process by developing new models. The importance of Big Data is expected to getting bigger and bigger,, but limited experts are always the concern. The MOU is expected to help resolve this problem. In order to foster experts needed in the industry, Samsung SDS and SKKU will cooperate closely to develop a course curriculum. SKKU professors will teach theoretical courses related to Big Data techniques while researchers at Samsung SDS will be appointed as adjunct professors in charge of practical training and case studies. In the meantime, Samsung SDS will provide an analysis tool called ‘Brightics AI’, which is an integrated data analysis platform based on Samsung AI, to students without charge. University College

- SKKU Holds South Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest
- SKKU Holds South Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest The South Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest was held in Bandung, Indonesia on Oct 25th, 2017. A total of 40 students from various countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and more participated in the event. The theme of the contest was ‘Dreams’ and Prof. Kyong Hwon KIM explained, “We chose the subject of ‘Dreams’ by hoping that the Sungkyun Writing Contest would be a stage of dreams for foreign students who long to go to Korea.” Azimatul ALIFIYAH from Universitas Gadjah Mada received a gold medal by writing, “I have many dreams and I believe I can achieve one of the dreams if I try my best and don’t give up. Using my Korean language skills, I would like to become a writer who promotes Korean culture to Indonesia.” The silver and bronze medals went to Pimpaka SONSEE (Thailand) and Khansa ZUYINA, respectively. SKKU will provide full scholarships to SKKU graduate programs to those students who received the award. Ja Choon KOO, the Vice President of International Affairs, said, “The Korean wave is recently sweeping Indonesia, and we will support the Sungkyun Writing Contest to become one of the main cultural events promoting Korean culture and Hangul.” University College
