- SKKU ranked 89th from THE World University Ranking, ‘the top of all private universities in South Korea'.
- Our university, SKKU ranked 89th from THE World University Ranking, ‘the top of all private universities in South Korea'. Seoul National University ranked 64th in the global university rankings, topping the list in Korea. Sungkyunkwan University ranked 89th and held onto the No. 2 spot at domestic universities this year as last year. British university evaluation agency THE(Times Higher Education) released its results on the 11th Sep through its "THE World University Rankings". The evaluation included the top 1,300 universities from 92 countries. Maeil Business News exclusively reports on the rankings of ‘THE universities evaluation’ in Korea. Seoul National University proved itself to be the best university in Korea this time, but its ranking dropped one notch from last year. The lower score in the internationalization category than the previous year is cited as a reason for the ranking’s drop. Sungkyunkwan University (89th), which established itself as the top of all private universities in South Korea by making its name as the world's top 100 for the first time last year, has been ranked seven notches lower than last year. It is analyzed that the slight drop in scores in education conditions and research performance is attributable to the decline. KAIST and POSTECH, the nation's top science and engineering universities, continue to see their rankings drop. KAIST ranked 110th and POSTECH 146th, respectively, down eight notches and four notches from a year earlier. Given that science and engineering colleges in major advanced countries are on the rise in rankings thanks to the government's aggressive investment in the wake of the fourth industrial revolution, some point out that the decline of science and engineering colleges in Korea should be noticed from the perspective of national competitiveness. Korea University ranked 179th, up 19 notches from last year, while Yonsei University jumped to 197th from 201 to 250 last year. Korea University, in particular, has been on a steady rise for three years in a row and received particularly good marks in part of Articles Citation Index. Meanwhile, the honor of the world's top university went to Oxford University in the U.K. for the fourth consecutive year. California Institute of Technology ranked second, followed by Cambridge University in the U.K. ranked third. The Original Article : https://www.mk.co.kr/news/society/view/2019/09/725453/

- SKKU held a ceremony for awarding Student Success Creativity Scholarship.
- SKKU held a ceremony for awarding Student Success Creativity Scholarship. Our university held a ceremony at the first room of the 600th Anniversary Hall at 11 p.m. on August 21 (wed) and awarded 61 students with student creativity Scholarship for their talents in various fields. It is new in terms of selecting students who have had achievements in various fields, such as learning research, foreign activities, service, communication, internationalization and start-up, breaking away from the conventional way of selecting scholarship students based on the level of grades or family incomes. In March this year, our university opened its first student success center in Korea and presented "Student Success" as a keyword for education. In the same vein, the scholarship program for student success was established this year to encourage student achievement and to nurture integrated and talented people. And the scholarship is detailed by Creativity Scholarship, Challenge Scholarship, Research Scholarship, and Harmony Scholarship. Students selected as creative students will receive a full scholarship for one semester, and students who are already receiving scholarships will be paid 2.5 million won in living expenses. "We have established a student success-creative scholarship system to recognize students' diverse talents and encourage them to develop themselves, rather than just evaluating students by their grades," said Bae Sang-hoon, head of the Office of Student Affairs. "I hope that students will grow up to be able to do their best and contribute further to society.“ The original article: https://www.skku.edu/skku/campus/skk_comm/news.do?mode=view&articleNo=74311

- Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU)’s Summer school Program in International co-sponsored with Fordham University Law school
- Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU)’s Summer school Program in International co-sponsored with Fordham University Law school For the past 13 summers, Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) which is Asia’s oldest continuous institution of higher learning, co-sponsored with Fordham University has offered students the opportunity to gain insight into another country’s justice system through the Summer Institute in International Law held in Seoul, South Korea. The program to date has hosted over 1,200 students from ten different countries and 70 different law schools. As the legal world continues to globalize, it has become necessary that lawyers have a deeper understanding of different legal cultures and systems as well as the laws that govern how different countries relate to one another. The two week academic program typically offers three-credit courses in comparative and international legal subjects, such as International Business Transactions, International Commercial Arbitration, and Transnational Criminal Law. Classes are conducted in English, and participants also have the option to apply for an internship of either three or four weeks after the program’s end. Every summer, the group visits important governmental institutions for a deeper look at South Korea’s justice system. This year’s participants had the opportunity to visit South Korea’s Supreme Court, where justices Min Yoo-sook and Kim Sang Hwan sat down with the students for a Q&A session. The justices and students discussed the Korean legal system, the role of the Court in Korean society, and the differences and similarities between the United States and Korean Supreme Courts. During the Supreme Court visit, two judges who work at the Court were also present, one of whom is a Fordham alum: Hyoin Kang (LL.M. ’17). He said that unlike in the United States, where Supreme Court justices typically hire recent law school graduates as clerks, Korean Supreme Court justices are assisted in their work by judges with at least ten years’ judicial experience. Though much of the conversation was facilitated by a translator, the discussion between the program’s students and the justices was not interrupted by language barrier. “We were free to ask questions and engage in a highly informative and stimulating dialogue with the two justices, whose answers reflected their deep learning and inspired us all,” said Professor Youngjae Lee, who leads the program. After the Q&A, students toured the Court’s buildings and accompanying museum. In addition to the Supreme Court, the students also visited the Constitutional Court of Korea and the National Assembly. “(The program) changed the way I see the world,” said participant Paul Guirguis. “We learned how different courts and legal systems interact, as well as the delicate balance between countries’ executive and judicial branches through discussing both historical and current events.” Original article : https://www.skku.edu/skku/campus/skk_comm/news.do?mode=view&articleNo=74215&article.offset=0&articleLimit=10

- University is providing student customized support
- The era of “on-demand” has started. Supply is no longer the determinant and demand has become the most important factor. One can notice this change in the university as well. Universities are reflecting the keyword “student success” in their policies to respond to the needs of the students and improve the quality of university education. The term “student success” and relevant programs can be easily found in American universities. Most of the universities are currently running “student success center”. It provides general support for students to be successful in both academics and university life. SKKU was the first Korean university to open Student Success Center. SKKU is the only university that has a physical center to provide student success related support but other Korean universities are also applying the idea to support their students. Sanghoon BAE, the Director of SKKU Student Success Center emphasized that it is necessary for each university to clarify their own definition of “student success”. “They must discover their characteristics by using data. Universities should listen to the comments of companies that have hired the students and search for a proper model and objective for student success. Furthermore, this information should be shared with the administrative offices, departments and professors.” Original article: http://news.unn.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=214921

- SKKU introduces “Student Success Scholarship”
- SKKU has been attracting attention since its introduction of a new scholarship program called 'Student Success Scholarship' this year. It is a program that gives scholarships to students who have challenged extracurricular activities or have demonstrated their sacrifices to the school community. It is a move to respect and encourage the various activities of students, and escape the old evaluation style which paid scholarship based on grades. According to SKKU, there are three tracks for this scholarship program. First, Creative-Convergent Research Challenge track is awarded to students who apply for patent or win at contests with creative ideas. Rewards may vary but awardees normally receive KRW 2,500,000 for living expense or are exempted tuition. Global Leader track is awarded to students who exercised sacrificial leadership for the school community. Candidates are student council presidents and leaders of student clubs and they will be rewarded KRW 500,000 each semester for living expense. Lastly, “modoo hamkkye” track is awarded to students who are experiencing financial difficulties. School will provide living expense and dormitory for these students.

- Reenacting “Bangbangrye”, the traditional award ceremony
- On May 20th, SKKU reenacted the “bangbangrye” with a modern interpretation to commemorate coming-of-Age Day. Bangbangrye is a traditional award ceremony for the jangwon (first prize winner) of the "gwageo" exam held during the Chosun dynasty. Traditionally, the jangwon would bow toward the king and receive hongpae (red certificate) along with a eosahwa (royal paper flower). The midterm exam of “Sungkyun Analects” course was taken in the traditional gwageo exam format. 2000 students in the “Sungkyun Analects” course took the exam at the end of April. Student were instructed to discuss about the duties of students based on the “Im-Joong-Do-Won” from the Analects. SKKU evaluated the answers of over 2000 students and selected 33 students just like the gwageo exam (gap: 3 students, eul: 7 students, Byung: 23 students). The jangwon title was awarded to the top student from the gap class. After the award ceremony, awardees went around the campus with the eosahwa on their hats. SKKU designated character education as mandatory courses for all students. “Sungkyun Analects” belongs to this category. All students must complete this course before graduation.”
